Chapter 5

The doctor examined Sophie that afternoon.

Bruised knees.

Dehydration.

Low blood sugar.

Stress response.

Words that sounded clinical until they were attached to my child.

Sophie sat on the exam table holding my hand.

“Do I have to go back to Vanessa?” she asked the pediatrician.

The doctor looked at me.

“No,” I said. “Never.”

Sophie looked at the doctor.

“Promise?”

The doctor’s eyes softened.

“I promise I will write down everything so people understand you were hurt.”

Sophie nodded.

“Write dog bowl.”

“I will.”

I turned away and cried silently.

By evening, child services opened a case.

Not against me, but involving my household.

That was fair.

My home had failed my daughter.

I had failed to see it.

My attorney, Nadine Park, came to the house after Sophie fell asleep.

She had represented my company for years.

That night, she represented my family.

“We file protective orders against Vanessa and your mother,” she said.

“My mother will fight.”

“Let her.”

“She has half the board in her pocket.”

Nadine smiled.

“Then we empty her pockets.”

Marcus entered with another tablet.

“Sir, we found deleted files.”

My stomach turned.

More.

There was always more.

Vanessa had kept a folder labeled Sophie Behavior.

Videos of my daughter crying.

Photos of spilled juice.

Recordings edited to remove Vanessa’s threats.

Nadine watched silently.

Then she said, “This was preparation.”

“For what?”

She looked at me.

“A custody argument after marriage. Or a trust petition.”

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Claire had left Sophie a trust.

And I had almost married a woman who wanted control of it.
