Chapter 13

The verdict came after six hours.

Guilty.

Child abuse.

False imprisonment.

Attempted fraud.

Conspiracy.

Identity document theft.

Vanessa’s knees buckled.

Her mother screamed from the back row.

I sat still.

Not because I felt nothing.

Because the feeling was too large to move inside.

At sentencing, I spoke.

“My daughter was not difficult,” I said. “She was grieving. She was trusting. She was six years old.”

Vanessa looked away.

“You treated her hunger as a lesson. You treated her fear as evidence. You treated her inheritance as a prize.”

My voice broke.

“I brought you into her home. That is my failure. But you chose cruelty. That is yours.”

Vanessa received prison time and restitution orders.

She was barred from any contact with Sophie.

The civil case against Eleanor followed.

The trust court removed her from every advisory role connected to Sophie’s inheritance.

Her social clubs dropped her.

The Sterling board cut her influence.

She lost power faster than I expected.

Without access, Eleanor became what she had always feared.

Just a woman with money and no one willing to obey her.

When I told Sophie Vanessa was gone, she asked, “No pantry?”

“No pantry.”

“No bowl?”

“No bowl.”

She hugged me.

“Daddy came.”

I closed my eyes.

“Yes,” I whispered. “Daddy came.”
