Chapter 17

Sophie was ten when she asked to read part of Claire’s letter.

I had saved it.

Protected it.

Feared it.

We sat in the garden with Margaret and Dr. Lane nearby.

I read only the gentle parts.

The warnings would wait.

Sophie listened carefully.

Then she asked, “Mommy Claire knew Grandma Eleanor was not safe?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know?”

I swallowed.

“Not enough.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted peace.”

Sophie frowned.

“Peace is not pretending.”

“No,” I said. “It isn’t.”

She leaned against me.

“You know now.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Children can forgive with a simplicity adults do not deserve.

But Sophie was not erasing.

She was naming.

That mattered.

Eleanor’s second letter arrived that year.

She asked for nothing.

She included proof she had donated half her remaining assets to the Safe Home Fund anonymously.

Nadine confirmed it.

I told Sophie only that someone who once did harm was trying to help repair harm.

“Do I have to thank them?”

“No.”

“Then okay.”

May you like

Boundaries.

My daughter understood them better at ten than I had at forty.
