Chapter 19

Vanessa was released when Sophie was sixteen.

The protective order remained.

She violated it within three months by sending Sophie a message through a fake account.

Sophie showed me immediately.

No fear.

Only anger.

The message said:

One day you’ll understand I was trying to make you stronger.

Sophie typed nothing back.

We sent it to Nadine.

Vanessa went back before a judge and received additional restrictions.

Sophie watched the hearing remotely.

When Vanessa cried, Sophie said, “She still thinks tears are keys.”

I looked at her.

That wisdom hurt.

Eleanor wrote after hearing about the violation.

I am sorry I taught women like Vanessa that cruelty could hide behind family.

Sophie read that one.

Then she said, “Grandma Eleanor can come to graduation if she sits with Dr. Lane.”

I raised my eyebrows.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes. She follows rules now.”

And she did.

At graduation, Eleanor sat quietly in the back.

No drama.

No speeches.

Afterward, she told Sophie, “I am proud of you.”

Sophie said, “Thank you.”

Then walked back to me.

That was enough.
