Chapter 11

The trial began in winter.

Sophie stayed home with Margaret.

I sat in court beside Nadine and listened to strangers discuss my daughter’s hunger.

The prosecutor played the kitchen footage.

Sophie kneeling.

The dog bowl.

Vanessa shoving her down.

My own voice breaking when I found her.

I had not realized I made that sound.

A wounded sound.

A father realizing money could buy cameras, guards, walls, and still fail to buy attention.

Vanessa stared at the table.

Her lawyer tried to argue discipline.

The prosecutor asked one question.

“Is dog food discipline?”

Vanessa whispered, “It was cereal.”

The prosecutor replied, “In a dog bowl.”

The jury saw the pantry footage next.

Sophie’s voice cried through the speakers.

“Daddy.”

Again.

Again.

Again.

I pressed my fist to my mouth.

Nadine touched my arm.

“Stay with me.”

I stayed.

Because Sophie had stayed alone in the dark.

My mother was subpoenaed.

She walked to the stand like she still owned the air.

The prosecutor asked if she witnessed Vanessa locking Sophie in the pantry.

Eleanor said, “I witnessed a frustrated caregiver.”

Then they played her words.

Only an hour. We don’t need marks.

For the first time, Eleanor Sterling looked small.
