Chapter 16

The foundation began because Sophie asked a question.

“What happens to kids whose daddies don’t come home?”

I did not know how to answer.

So I found one.

Nadine connected me with child advocates.

Dr. Lane introduced me to family trauma specialists.

Margaret suggested we use Claire’s name.

Sophie approved.

We created The Claire Hale Safe Home Fund.

Emergency help for children in abusive households.

Legal support.

Therapy.

Temporary housing.

Food security.

No child eating from a bowl meant for an animal.

At the launch, I spoke honestly.

“I had wealth, staff, and cameras,” I said. “My daughter was still hurt because I trusted the wrong adults and ignored the quiet changes in her fear. Protection is not a feeling. It is attention.”

Sophie sat in the front row with Margaret.

She wore a yellow dress and held Mrs. Bell’s hand.

Afterward, she asked, “Mommy Claire helps kids now?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

That night, I dreamed of Claire for the first time in years.

She stood in the kitchen, not angry.

Just watching Sophie laugh.

When I woke, I cried with gratitude and grief.

Both can live in the same chest.
