Chapter 8

Rachel refused to meet Vanessa alone.

Instead, prosecutors arranged a recorded conversation behind reinforced glass.

I watched from another room with Detective Moreno.

Rachel sat across from her sister.

Vanessa looked tired.

But not remorseful.

“You ruined me,” Vanessa said.

Rachel stared at her.

“You attacked my daughter in a school.”

“She humiliated me.”

“She wore a princess dress.”

“She told parents you abandoned her.”

Rachel’s voice shook.

“Because you convinced her I did.”

Vanessa looked away.

Rachel leaned forward.

“Why?”

No answer.

“Why did you hate Mia?”

“I didn’t hate her.”

“You starved her emotionally.”

Vanessa’s head snapped up.

“I never starved her.”

“No. You told her her mother didn’t want her.”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“You stole my letters.”

Silence.

“You forged Daniel’s messages.”

Silence.

“You made my child think she caused our family to fall apart.”

Vanessa finally whispered, “You always got everything.”

Rachel stared.

“What?”

“Mom loved you more.”

“That isn’t true.”

“You got the house.”

“You got money first.”

“You got Daniel.”

Rachel blinked.

I felt my stomach tighten in the observation room.

Vanessa continued.

“You got Mia.”

Rachel slowly understood.

“This was about jealousy?”

“It was about fairness.”

Rachel laughed through tears.

“You tried to steal a child’s trust because you thought life wasn’t fair?”

Vanessa slammed her palm onto the table.

“You have no idea what it felt like watching everyone choose you!”

Rachel became very still.

Then she said something that silenced Vanessa.

“Mia never chose against you.”

Vanessa stared.

“She loved you.”

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“And you punished her for loving me.”

Vanessa looked down.

For the first time, shame appeared.

But it didn’t last.

She looked toward the camera.

“I want a deal.”

Moreno entered.

“You’re not in a position to demand one.”

“I can give you Officer Hendricks.”

“We already have him.”

“Alexander Crane.”

“He’s cooperating.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Then she smiled.

“You don’t have Judge Wallace.”

Moreno froze.

“Who?”

“Judge Robert Wallace.”

Rachel looked confused.

I wasn’t.

Wallace had signed the emergency paperwork Vanessa planned to use after our supposed disappearance.

Moreno asked, “He knew?”

Vanessa leaned back.

“He knew enough.”

Investigators moved quickly.

Financial records revealed Crane had transferred money to a company connected to Judge Wallace’s brother.

Wallace denied wrongdoing.

Then police recovered messages.

Vanessa wrote:

Need emergency order same day.

Crane answered:

RW confirmed.

The investigation grew beyond our family.

My daughter’s torn dress had exposed something much larger.

A network willing to manipulate custody and financial cases for money.

Then another development changed everything.

Rachel received a call from her father.

We hadn’t heard from him in years.

He lived in Florida and had been estranged from both sisters.

His first words were:

“Vanessa did this before.”

Rachel went pale.

“What?”

Their father continued.

“When you were teenagers, she forged your signature to access your mother’s account.”

Rachel stared at the phone.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I thought I handled it.”

May you like

He began crying.

“I was wrong.”
