Chapter 7

I changed every lock that night.
Then Mia showed us something even worse.
“Aunt Vanessa said there’s another key outside.”
“Where?”
Mia pointed toward the backyard.
Police searched.
Behind the electrical box was a magnetic key holder.
I had never placed it there.
Inside was a duplicate house key.
Vanessa had prepared access even if I changed ordinary routines.
Detective Moreno bagged it as evidence.
Rachel stood beside me.
“How long was she planning this?”
“Probably longer than we knew her.”
Rachel looked sick.
“She was my sister.”
That fact made everything harder.
Vanessa wasn’t a stranger who entered our family from nowhere.
She had grown up with Rachel.
They shared birthdays.
Bedrooms.
Parents.
Yet Rachel admitted Vanessa had always resented her.
“When Mom died, Vanessa became obsessed with inheritance.”
“What inheritance?”
“Our mother left me the family house.”
“Why you?”
“Vanessa had already received money earlier.”
But Vanessa never accepted that explanation.
Years later, when Rachel married me and then my mother created a trust for Mia, Vanessa apparently saw another fortune she believed belonged closer to her.
Greed had become obsession.
Police searched family financial records.
They discovered Vanessa had debts approaching $600,000.
Failed investments.
Credit cards.
Private loans.
She needed money desperately.
Then investigators found messages between Vanessa and someone saved as ALEX.
ALEX wrote:
Once you control the trust, we clear everything.
Vanessa replied:
Mia is the easy part. Daniel watches too closely.
Rachel read the message.
“Who is Alex?”
She knew three people with that name.
None matched the phone number.
Police traced it.
Alexander Crane.
A financial consultant.
And Vanessa’s secret fiancé.
Rachel stared at the photograph.
“She was engaged?”
“For eight months.”
“So she was planning a new life.”
Moreno nodded.
“With Mia’s money.”
Crane was arrested leaving a bank.
He immediately asked for a lawyer.
But his computer said enough.
Draft transfers.
Offshore accounts.
Fake guardianship papers.
A detailed timeline for next Friday.
Vanessa would enter my house at 6:00 a.m.
Rachel and I would be served coffee containing sedatives.
At 7:30, a hired driver would take us to the airport.
The driver had been told we were nervous flyers who had taken medication.
Our luggage would already be in the trunk.
Airport security footage would show us arriving.
But the plan ended there.
No airline boarding.
No Denver.
Instead, another vehicle was supposed to move us somewhere else.
Moreno looked at me.
“We haven’t identified the second location.”
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“What would happen to us?”
“We don’t know.”
I looked at Mia playing nearby.
I knew one thing.
Vanessa wanted enough time to claim we had voluntarily disappeared.
Then Crane made a deal.
He offered the location.
An isolated rental cabin two hours north.
Police searched it.
Inside were restraints.
More medication.
Two prepaid phones.
No weapons.
No bodies.
But the intention was obvious enough to terrify me.
Moreno arrested Vanessa on additional charges.
When she learned Crane had cooperated, she exploded.
“You think he’s innocent?”
Nobody answered.
“He planned everything!”
Moreno stared at her.
“Then tell us your part.”
Vanessa leaned back.
For the first time, her confidence cracked.
“I’ll talk.”
May you like
But she wanted something in return.
One meeting with Rachel.
