Chapter 1

I heard my daughter scream before I reached the school hallway.

“Mia!”

I rounded the corner and stopped cold.

My seven-year-old daughter was on her knees beside the classroom doors, trying to hold together the front of her torn princess dress.

Vanessa stood over her.

My ex-wife’s sister had one fist tangled in Mia’s hair.

“Princesses don’t come from broken homes,” Vanessa sneered.

Mia’s paper crown had fallen beside her.

Parents and children stood frozen around them.

Nobody seemed to know what to do.

I did.

“Let her go.”

Vanessa turned.

Her expression changed when she saw me, but her hand didn’t release Mia.

“She embarrassed the family.”

“She’s seven.”

“She told everyone her mother abandoned her.”

Mia cried harder.

“She asked me where Mommy was.”

My chest tightened.

Mia’s mother, Rachel, had left us almost a year earlier.

She barely called.

Vanessa blamed me for the divorce.

Apparently, now she blamed Mia too.

I crossed the hallway and pulled Vanessa’s hand away from my daughter’s hair.

Mia immediately crawled toward me.

Her costume was torn from the shoulder down.

I removed my coat and wrapped it around her.

“You’re okay, sweetheart.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Stop babying her.”

I looked at her.

“You dragged my child across a school hallway.”

“She needed to learn not to lie.”

Mia looked up.

“I didn’t lie, Daddy.”

“I know.”

Vanessa stepped toward her again.

“You little—”

I blocked her.

“Don’t touch her.”

She shoved my chest.

Then reached around me for Mia.

I slapped Vanessa across the face and pushed her away from my daughter.

She stumbled against the wall.

Parents gasped.

“You hit me!”

“You went after my child again.”

Before Vanessa could respond, Principal Howard rushed from the office with the school security officer.

“Everyone stop!”

Vanessa immediately pointed at me.

“He attacked me!”

Principal Howard looked at her.

Then at Mia.

Then at the hallway monitor mounted beside his office.

“Ms. Carter, we already reviewed the footage.”

Vanessa froze.

“What?”

The security officer connected the camera feed to the lobby display.

Parents watched silently.

There was Vanessa grabbing Mia’s dress.

Ripping it.

Mia falling.

Vanessa pulling her by the hair.

No provocation.

No attack from Mia.

Nothing Vanessa could explain away.

Her face slowly lost its color.

Police arrived minutes later.

Vanessa screamed that the video was misleading.

Nobody believed her.

Officers escorted her through the same hallway where she had humiliated my daughter.

I lifted Mia into my arms.

She touched the torn fabric beneath my coat.

“My princess dress is ruined.”

I kissed her forehead.

“A torn dress doesn’t change who you are.”

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

Then Principal Howard approached me.

“Mr. Carter.”

“Yes?”

“There’s something you need to see.”

He held up a folder.
