Chapter 7

The investigation uncovered Linda’s plan.
It had started months before Noah was born.
She had told relatives I was fragile.
Forgetful.
Unstable.
She claimed I resented carrying “the Carter heir.”
She told Michael I needed watching.
She told hospital donors she was funding the maternity wing in honor of her grandson.
Then she arranged a private room on a quiet floor.
She requested staff changes.
She had Leonard Voss listed as a “family consultant.”
Dr. Patel had blocked him twice.
That was why he came before dawn.
Before shift change.
Before records caught up.
Before I was strong enough to fight.
Linda wanted me drugged.
Noah moved.
Emily dismissed as a frightened child.
Then she would claim I had signed everything during a postpartum episode.
My stomach turned when Detective Morales explained it.
“What about Emily?”
He hesitated.
“She told Voss the older child could be handled by boarding school.”
I covered my mouth.
Emily was in the next room drawing dinosaurs for Noah.
My daughter had heard enough to save us.
But not everything.
Thank God.
Michael gave police access to Linda’s house.
They found a nursery.
Not a grandmother’s nursery.
A mother’s nursery.
Crib.
Formula.
Legal folders.
A framed photo of Linda holding an ultrasound picture.
On the wall, wooden letters spelled Lawrence.
I looked at the crime scene photos until I could not breathe.
Then I closed the file.

“Noah,” I whispered.
“His name is Noah.”
