Chapter 11

Linda’s lawyer tried to destroy me.

He asked about my first marriage.

Emily’s father.

My anxiety after a miscarriage years earlier.

He asked if I had ever felt overwhelmed as a mother.

I answered honestly.

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“So you admit you were fragile.”

I looked at him.

“I admit I was human.”

The courtroom went quiet.

He tried again.

“Did you resent Mrs. Carter’s involvement?”

“I resented her trying to take my baby.”

He held up a photo of Linda’s nursery.

“Isn’t it possible she was simply excited?”

“No,” I said. “Excited grandmothers buy blankets. They do not hire fake doctors with sedatives.”

A juror looked down, hiding a smile.

Then Emily’s video played again.

I dreaded it.

But my daughter’s voice was steady.

“Mom listened to me,” she said. “Grandma didn’t think grown-ups would believe a kid.”

The prosecutor paused the video.

“Did your mother believe you?”

Emily nodded.

“Right away.”

I cried silently.

That mattered more than any verdict.

Linda did not testify.

Control hates cross-examination.

Michael testified instead.

He admitted his mother had spent years undermining me.

He admitted he dismissed my concerns.

He admitted he failed Emily.

Then he looked at the jury.

“My mother planned the crime. But my weakness gave her room.”

May you like

Linda stared at him like he had died.

Maybe, to her, he had.
