Chapter 12

The verdict came on a rainy afternoon.

Guilty.

Attempted kidnapping.

Guilty.

Forgery.

Guilty.

Conspiracy.

Guilty.

Child endangerment.

Guilty.

Assault.

Linda gripped the table.

For the first time, she looked old.

At sentencing, I spoke with Noah on my hip.

Emily stood beside me, holding my free hand.

“My son was minutes old when Linda tried to take him,” I said. “My daughter was eight when she had to protect her mother from adults who should have protected her.”

Linda looked away.

Good.

“She treated love like a legal claim. She treated children like heirs and women like obstacles. Today, I ask the court to make clear that motherhood is not something a grandmother can forge, buy, or steal.”

Emily squeezed my hand.

The judge sentenced Linda to prison.

Years.

Real years.

She also terminated any legal path for contact while the protective order remained.

As deputies took her away, Linda turned to Michael.

“You chose her.”

Michael stood.

“No,” he said. “I chose my children.”

I did not forgive him then.

But I heard the difference.
