Chapter 6: The Message From The Past

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

The email sat in my hand.

A message from my husband’s account.

A name I hadn’t seen active since the day everything changed.

Ethan Carter.

My husband.

Mia’s father.

Dead for two years.

My fingers went cold.

“That’s impossible.””

The principal looked at me carefully.

“I thought the same thing.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

I pulled the paper away.

“No.””

He stopped.

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to explain this away.””

His face fell.

“I’m not trying to.””

“Then tell me how my dead husband sent an email.””

Nobody answered.

The principal closed the office door.

“We received it three months ago. It was sent from an account that matched his old email.””

I stared at the message.

“What did it say?””

The principal hesitated.

“We didn’t open it at first.””

“Why?””

“Because it looked personal.””

I looked at the screen.

“And then?””

“After today’s incident, we realized it might be connected.””

My heart pounded.

I opened the email.

The first line appeared.

*If you are reading this, something happened to me.*

My breath stopped.

I read the next sentence.

*Do not trust Vanessa.*

The room became blurry.

Daniel whispered.

“What?””

I looked up.

“You knew.””

He looked confused.

“Knew what?””

I turned the laptop toward him.

He read the words.

His face changed.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I kept reading.

The message continued.

*She will tell everyone she is protecting Mia. She will say she knows what is best. But she is not protecting my daughter. She is protecting herself.*

My hands shook.

The next part was harder.

*Two weeks before my accident, I found out Vanessa had been hiding something from the family. Something involving money and documents.*

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

“You knew about this.””

He shook his head quickly.

“No.””

But his voice lacked confidence.

The principal noticed too.

“Mr. Carter?””

Daniel sat down.

“I knew there was a disagreement.””

“What kind of disagreement?”” I asked.

He rubbed his face.

“Vanessa and Ethan argued.””

“When?””

“Before the accident.””

The room went silent.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because Ethan told me not to.””

My heart raced.

“What did he say?””

Daniel looked at the email.

“He said if anything happened to him, I needed to protect you and Mia.””

I stared at him.

“And instead, you helped Vanessa take my daughter.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I didn’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

I looked away.

“But you should have.””

The principal cleared his throat.

“There’s more in the email.””

I scrolled down.

The next paragraph made my entire body freeze.

*Vanessa knows about the insurance money. She knows about the account I created for Mia. She will try to make people believe you cannot manage things without her.*

I stopped reading.

Insurance money.

Account.

Mia.

I looked at Daniel.

“What account?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His silence was enough.

The principal looked between us.

“Mr. Carter?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Ethan created a trust for Mia.””

“How much?””

He looked down.

“A significant amount.””

“How much?””

His voice dropped.

“Seven hundred thousand dollars.””

The room went completely still.

Seven hundred thousand dollars.

Money Vanessa knew about.

Money she could only access if she controlled Mia’s custody.

I felt sick.

The dress.

The humiliation.

The petition.

The lies.

It all connected.

This was never about protecting a child.

It was about controlling one.

The principal looked at the email again.

“There’s one final section.””

I swallowed.

“What does it say?””

He looked serious.

“It says Ethan left evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

The principal turned the laptop toward me.

The last sentence was visible.

*The person who helped Vanessa hide the truth is someone you trust.*

My eyes moved slowly.

To Daniel.

Then away.

Because I didn’t want to believe it.

I didn’t want another betrayal.

But before I could ask anything else, there was a knock at the office door.

A woman stepped inside.

She was holding an envelope.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I stood.

“Yes?””

She looked nervous.

“I’m from the attorney’s office handling Ethan’s estate.””

My heart stopped.

“I thought everything was settled.””

She shook her head.

“It was supposed to be.””

She handed me the envelope.

“But this morning, we discovered a hidden document.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Written in Ethan’s handwriting.

And at the top were the words:

*For my wife, if Vanessa tries to take Mia away.*

I looked at the first line.

May you like

And my entire world changed.

Because Ethan’s letter revealed the reason Vanessa had been desperate to destroy me.
