Chapter 2: The Video Everyone Saw
The screen above the hallway played silently at first.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Everyone watched.
The footage showed Mia walking down the hallway twenty minutes earlier.
She was holding her teacher’s hand.
Her little crown sat crooked on her head.
She was smiling.
The kind of smile only children have.
The kind that exists before the world teaches them to hide their happiness.
Then Vanessa appeared.
She walked into the frame wearing a designer coat and carrying a coffee cup.
At first, nothing seemed wrong.
She smiled at Mia.
A few parents watching the video probably assumed it was a loving aunt greeting her niece.
Then the audio turned on.
And the hallway went completely quiet.
“Mia.””
Vanessa’s voice came through the speakers.
“Come here.””
The little girl in the video looked up.
“Hi, Aunt Vanessa.””
Vanessa looked around.
“No one told you to wear that?””
Mia looked confused.
“Wear what?””
“The dress.””
Mia smiled.
“My mommy made it for me.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Even watching the video, I could feel the cruelty behind that look.
“It looks cheap.””
The parents standing around me gasped softly.
Mia’s face fell.
“But I like it.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You don’t understand. Today there are important people here.””
“I’m a princess today,” Mia said quietly.
Vanessa laughed.
A cold, ugly laugh.
“A princess?””
The video showed Mia holding the skirt of her dress.
“Yes.””
Vanessa looked her up and down.
“Real princesses have perfect families.””
Nobody breathed.
I felt Mia’s fingers holding onto my coat tighten.
The principal looked uncomfortable.
The video continued.
Mia looked down.
“My family is perfect.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Your daddy isn’t even here.””
That sentence hit harder than I expected.
Because Mia’s father had passed away two years earlier.
And Vanessa knew exactly what she was doing.
She knew where to hurt.
She knew how to make a child feel small.
Mia looked at the floor.
“My daddy loved me.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Maybe.””
A few parents covered their mouths.
I felt anger burning through me.
But I stayed silent.
I needed everyone to see.
Vanessa continued.
“Maybe if your mother stopped pretending everything was fine, people wouldn’t feel sorry for you.””
Mia’s eyes filled with tears.
Then she said something that made my chest ache.
“I don’t want people to feel sorry for me.””
Vanessa looked annoyed.
“Then stop acting like you belong here.””
The video showed Mia trying to walk away.
And that was when Vanessa grabbed her.
The hallway gasped.
The real Vanessa beside me went pale.
“That’s not what happened,” she whispered.
Nobody looked at her.
Nobody believed her.
On the screen, Vanessa pulled the little girl back.
Mia stumbled.
Her dress caught on Vanessa’s bracelet.
The fabric ripped.
Mia fell.
And then came the part nobody expected.
Vanessa didn’t help her.
She didn’t apologize.
She didn’t even look worried.
She leaned down and whispered something into Mia’s ear.
The audio caught it.
“If you tell anyone, I’ll tell them you ruined it yourself.””
I felt Mia suddenly bury her face against me.
The pain in that small movement said more than words ever could.
The video ended.
The screen went black.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a mother standing nearby stepped forward.
“That’s disgusting.””
Vanessa looked around desperately.
“You don’t understand.””
I stared at her.
“Then explain.””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
The principal folded his arms.
“Mrs. Carter, there is more.””
My stomach tightened.
“More?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
He turned the tablet toward himself.
“We reviewed the footage because of another complaint.””
Vanessa’s face changed again.
“What complaint?””
The principal looked at her.
“One from last month.””
The hallway became tense.
Vanessa swallowed.
“What are you talking about?””
The principal pressed another video.
This time, it wasn’t from the hallway.
It was from the school entrance.
And when the footage appeared, I saw something that made me realize Mia’s ruined dress wasn’t the beginning.
It was only the first thing Vanessa had been caught doing.
The principal looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter, I think you need to see who else Vanessa has been targeting.””
May you like
The video began.
And the person walking into the frame was someone I never expected.
