Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE THAT LIES

I did not sleep that night.
I lay in bed, clutching Clara’s phone to my chest, replaying every word the stranger had said. *She wasn’t Mia’s mother at all.* *Your wife never wrote it.* Mia belongs to someone else.
Each sentence looped in my mind like a song I could not stop hearing.
Down the hall, my father paced his study. I could hear him walking back and forth, back and forth, as if the motion might somehow shake the truth loose. Once, around midnight, I got up and stood outside his door. Through the wood, I heard him speaking in a low, tight voice to someone on the phone.
“Yes… I found it too. Mercer. Elizabeth Mercer… I’ve never heard the name… She changed the locks monthly, yes… I don’t know who she was afraid of… I will keep Mia safe. Whatever the cost.”
He paused. Then he said something that made me press my ear harder against the door.
“Vanessa knew. That is why she attacked Mia. She didn’t care about the money—not really. She was trying to destroy the proof before I saw it. She was working with that man. They were partners.”
A long silence. Then Adrian said, “If what he said is true… if Mia isn’t legally mine… then I have no rights at all. They could take her. And I would be helpless.”
I stumbled back from the door, my hand flying to my mouth so they wouldn’t hear me gasp.
*Take me?*
I ran back to my room and crawled under the blankets, pulling them over my head. If my mother wasn’t really my mother… if Adrian wasn’t really my father… then who was I? And why had the woman who raised me lied about everything?
Morning came too slowly. I dressed quietly and went downstairs. My father sat at the kitchen table, unshaven, eyes rimmed with red. Before him lay the trust document, spread open so the signature faced upward. He had drawn a circle around the name—*ELIZABETH MERCER*—and beside it, in his own handwriting, was the date: September 14th. The day before she died.
He looked up when I entered. Quickly, he reached out and covered the page with his hand.
“Mia. Good morning.”
“Who is Elizabeth Mercer?” I asked.
He flinched as if I had struck him. “Where did you hear that name?”
“I read it. On the paper.” I pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down, keeping my voice very steady. “Is that… is that my real mother’s name?”
He hesitated. For a long time, he simply looked at me, as if trying to decide how much to say. Then he sighed and leaned back.
“I do not know, Mia. I loved your mother more than anything in this world. But I also know… there were things she kept from me. Secrets she said were meant to protect us.” He tapped the signature. “This name… I have never seen it before. Not anywhere. Not on any document, letter, or photo album.”
“Could the man yesterday be related to her?”
“It is possible. But until we know for certain… we must be careful. Very careful.” He reached across the table and took my hand. “I have asked the police to increase patrols around the house. Clara will never be far from your side. And until this is resolved… you will not be attending Hawthorne Academy. Not yet.”
My heart sank. “But Daddy—”
“I know. And I am so sorry. But Vanessa is still out on bail. That man knows where we live. Until we understand what they are planning… I cannot risk you.” He squeezed my hand. “We will get to the truth, Mia. I promise you that. Whatever lies beneath these secrets… we will face it together.”
But later that afternoon, when my father was speaking privately with his lawyer in the study, I noticed something he had missed. Beneath the circled name, there was a tiny smudge in the corner of the paper. It looked like ink had been deliberately wiped away—leaving only two faint letters behind.
*VA.*
I sat back, staring at them. VA. What did that mean? An initial? A city? A code?
I reached out and touched the spot with my fingertip. The paper was still slightly rough there, as if someone had scratched it out in a terrible hurry.
And then I realized something else. The water from the pond had faded the surrounding ink—making the erased letters visible when they had been invisible before.
Vanessa had tried to destroy these papers. But in doing so… she had accidentally revealed the very clue she wanted hidden.
I pulled a notebook from the desk and copied the letters carefully. VA. Then I folded the paper small and tucked it inside my necklace, right above my heart.
That evening, the lawyer left. Adrian looked exhausted. He came to my room before bed and sat beside me.
“I have news,” he said quietly. “About Vanessa.”
My breath caught. “Did she go to jail?”
“She was due in court this morning. But… she never arrived. Her car was found abandoned near the state line. She is gone, Mia. Vanished.” He looked at me gravely. “And the police found something in her apartment. Letters. Handwritten. Signed only with those two letters.”
My heart skipped. “VA?”
Adrian stared at me. “How did you—”
I pulled the folded scrap from my necklace and handed it to him. He unfolded it, and his face went pale.
“Where did you find this?”
“On the paper. Under the signature. Daddy… who is VA?”
He stood up slowly, his expression shifting from shock to a kind of dawning horror. He walked to the window and looked out into the dark garden, toward the koi pond where this all began.
“VA,” he whispered to himself. “Vanessa… Adrian… Victoria… Virginia… No. None of those fit.” He turned back to me, his eyes searching mine. “There is one other possibility. But if it is true… then this goes far deeper than I ever imagined.”
“Tell me,” I said.
He took a breath. “Elizabeth Mercer. VA… could stand for VANESSA ALDRIDGE.”
I blinked. “But that is her name.”
“Exactly. Which means…” He gripped the windowsill until his knuckles turned white. “Vanessa knew Elizabeth Mercer. She knew my wife’s real name. And she has been communicating with someone who either signed with her own initials… or was hiding behind them.”
He pulled out his phone and dialed quickly. “Detective? It’s Adrian Hale. I need you to trace every letter, every call, every connection Vanessa Aldridge ever made to the name Elizabeth Mercer.”
He paused, listening. Then his face fell.
“What do you mean? All of them were erased?” He gripped the phone tighter. “Someone wiped her phone, her cloud storage, everything? Before she disappeared?”
Silence stretched. Then he said quietly, “Thank you. Keep looking.”
He ended the call and turned to me. The look in his eyes frightened me more than anything that had happened so far.
“They covered their tracks,” he said. “Every single one. Which means…”
“Which means what, Daddy?”
He knelt before me and held my shoulders firmly.
“Whoever VA really is… they are powerful. Connected. And they have been planning this for a very long time. Longer than Vanessa was in our lives. Longer than that.”
He reached out and tucked the scrap of paper back into my necklace, pressing it securely beneath the chain.
“Keep this safe, Mia. And tell no one. Not Clara. Not the police. Not even me… unless we are absolutely alone.”
I nodded, clutching the necklace through my shirt.
May you like
That night, as I lay awake, I traced the outline of the paper against my skin. VA. Two letters. A name erased. A signature that was not my mother’s. And somewhere out there… a person who had been pulling strings long before I was even born.
I closed my eyes and made a silent promise to whoever Elizabeth Mercer was. Whoever you were… whatever you were hiding… I will find the truth. And I will finish what you started.
