Chapter 10 - THE LAST CONFESSION

Adrian hesitated. He lowered the weapon slightly, then stepped to the door.

“Vanessa?”

“Open it, Adrian. They are coming. They will kill me if they find me.” She sounded broken. No longer cold or arrogant—only terrified.

Adrian unlocked the door and pulled it open.

Vanessa fell across the threshold. Her clothes were torn, her face streaked with dirt and tears. There was a fresh cut along her cheek and blood stained her sleeve. She collapsed onto the floor, gasping for air.

Adrian bolted the door again. He stood over her, weapon still pointed at her chest.

“Speak quickly,” he said. “Why should I let you inside?”

Vanessa looked up, her eyes wild. “Because I know everything. And because Julian Mercer will be here within the hour.”

Adrian flinched. “Julian?”

“He is real. He is alive. And he has been waiting for Elizabeth to reveal herself so he could capture all of us at once.” Vanessa pulled herself painfully to her feet and leaned against the wall. “I was a fool. I thought I could make a deal with him. I thought if I gave him the documents… he would give me half. Instead… he told me what he planned to do with Mia.”

She looked at me where I stood in the shadows. Her expression was not hatred now. It was shame.

“I am sorry, Mia. For the pond. For everything. I did not know… I did not understand what kind of monster Julian truly is.”

“Tell us everything,” Adrian said. “From the beginning.”

Vanessa sank onto a wooden chair and wrapped her arms around herself.

“I met Julian two years ago. He approached me at a charity event. He told me his niece—a woman named Elizabeth—had stolen a fortune that did not belong to her. He said if I married you and helped him recover the documents… we would all be wealthy. I believed him.”

She paused, swallowing hard.

“He told me Victoria was an imposter. That Mia had no right to anything. That I was saving you from being deceived.”

“And when you learned the truth?” Adrian asked.

“I learned too late.” Vanessa closed her eyes. “I found the photograph. I saw the names. And then I realized—Julian did not want justice. He wanted to erase Mia. To rewrite the family tree so only his blood remained.”

“Why did you throw the backpack into the pond?” I asked quietly.

Vanessa looked at me, tears spilling over. “Because Julian told me to destroy anything with Elizabeth’s signature. He said if those documents were ruined… he could replace them with new ones. Documents that left everything to him. And declared you… legally nonexistent.”

I stared at her. “You were trying to erase me.”

“I was following orders. By the time I realized what that truly meant… it was too late. Julian sent men to watch me. To make sure I finished the job.” Her voice cracked. “When I ran from the house… I tried to go to him. To bargain. And that was when I saw it. The men he keeps. The things he is capable of.”

She pulled a small folded paper from her pocket and held it out.

“I stole this from his study before I ran.”

Adrian took it. He unfolded it by the firelight. His face went pale.

“It is an adoption order,” he said. “Signed and sealed. Ready to be filed.” He looked at Vanessa, horrified. “In the name of Julian Mercer. He planned to adopt Mia.”

Vanessa nodded. “And then… he planned to declare you unfit. Dangerous. Gone. And Mia would become his ward. His heir. His property. No one would ever question it.”

Silence filled the lodge. I felt sick. He wanted to take me. To make me his. To erase Adrian, to erase Victoria, to erase everything that was truly mine.

“Why are you telling us this now?” Adrian asked.

“Because I saw what he did to Elizabeth.” Vanessa’s voice dropped to a whisper. “At the boathouse… I was hiding nearby. He caught her. He did not kill her. He took her.”

My heart stopped. “Is she alive?”

“She is alive. But Julian has her now. He is holding her somewhere. Waiting. He knows she gave you the ledger. He knows you have the proof.” Vanessa stood up, swaying unsteadily. “He will not hurt her as long as you remain free. As long as he can trade her for the ledger.”

Adrian gripped the edge of the mantel. “He wants to exchange Elizabeth for the evidence.”

“Yes. And he will kill her if you refuse.” Vanessa looked between us. “He will also kill Mia. And then he will kill you. There is no winning, Adrian. Not unless you expose him first.”

Adrian walked to the window again, staring out into the dark woods. He turned back to Vanessa.

“What do you know about Julian’s holdings? His properties? Where could he be keeping her?”

Vanessa hesitated. Then she walked to the fire and pulled a small silver locket from around her neck. She opened it and tipped a tiny scrap of paper into her palm.

“Before he left me… he told me where to go when I had the documents. A place he calls the Sanctuary.” She handed the scrap to Adrian. “This is the address. But Adrian—be careful. It is his private estate. Protected by guards. High walls. No one enters without permission.”

Adrian tucked the paper carefully into his pocket. He looked at Vanessa for a long moment, his expression unreadable.

“Why are you helping us?”

Vanessa looked into the fire. Tears tracked through the dirt on her face.

“Because I realized too late that I was not the villain of this story. I was just a pawn. And Julian… he is the kind of man who destroys everyone who gets close to him.” She looked up at me. “I tried to drown your future, Mia. You were right to hate me. But I will not let him destroy you too.”

She stood up and walked to the door.

“Where are you going?” Adrian asked.

“To buy you time. Julian’s men are tracking my phone. I will lead them away from here.” She gripped the doorknob. “Do not try to follow me. And do not trust anyone. Not the police. Not friends. Not even family.”

“Vanessa—”

“Goodbye, Adrian.” She opened the door and stepped out into the darkness. “Save the child. And save Elizabeth.”

The door clicked shut.

Adrian stood motionless, staring at the closed door. Then he pulled me close and held me tightly, his chin resting on top of my head.

“She is gone,” he whispered. “And she has led Julian straight to us.”

He pulled the scrap of paper from his pocket and read the address by firelight. Then he looked at the ledger on the table.

“We have what we need, Mia. We have the proof. We have the location. And we have a choice.” He closed the ledger and slipped it into his coat. “We can run. Or we can go to the Sanctuary. And finish what your mother started.”

I looked up at him. “Will we save Elizabeth?”

Adrian looked out the window, toward the dark treeline where Vanessa had vanished.

“We will try. But whatever happens… I need you to be brave. Can you do that for me?”

I nodded, even though my knees were shaking. “Yes, Daddy.”

He kissed the top of my head. Then he stood up and reached for the lantern.

“Then we leave. Now. Before Julian arrives.”

We stepped out into the cold night. The forest was silent except for the distant, faint wail of sirens—heading toward the main road, heading away from us. Vanessa had kept her word. She had led them astray. But how long would it take Julian to realize he had been tricked? How long before he came for us?

Adrian took my hand. Together we began walking toward the Sanctuary. Toward danger. Toward the truth. And toward the uncle who had been waiting for me since before I was even born.
