Chapter 4 - WHY ELENA CHOSE LILYNaomi Price flew in the next morning.

She was fifty-two.

Silver-streaked hair.

Black glasses.

No interest in Blackwood intimidation.

Victor asked:

“Why did Elena choose Lily?”

Naomi answered:

“She didn’t choose Lily as nanny.”

“Then what?”

“She chose a type of person.”

That made more sense.

Elena’s instructions described criteria.

Licensed childcare experience.

No financial dependency on the Blackwood family beyond salary.

No romantic relationship with household members.

Mandatory reporting training.

Ability to contact outside counsel.

Lily happened to fit.

Then Elena added Lily’s name after meeting her twice.

Why?

Because Lily had done something small.

During Ethan’s feeding appointment, Elena became frustrated.

The baby wouldn’t stop crying.

A private nurse suggested holding him down.

Lily said:

“No.”

Politely.

But firmly.

She suggested stopping.

Letting Ethan calm.

Trying again.

Elena noticed.

Lily was willing to contradict someone richer than her to protect a child.

That was all.

Not destiny.

Character observed in an ordinary moment.

Elena wrote:

If Ms. Carter is available, consider her. She seems more concerned with the child’s distress than with pleasing the adults in the room.

Lily cried when she read that.

Victor looked away.

He was crying too.
