Chapter 10

The storage unit did not contain money.
It contained history.
Investigators opened it after obtaining the necessary authority.
Inside were old Rizzano business files.
Copies of vehicle records.
Photographs.
Two missing security drives from the estate.
And a cardboard records box from Lakeview Fleet Services.
Damien had not destroyed the documents.
He had hidden them.
That decision became his greatest mistake.
The work order from Elena’s second vehicle inspection was still inside.
The technician had written:
STEERING SYSTEM REQUIRES IMMEDIATE REPAIR. VEHICLE NOT SAFE FOR HIGHWAY OPERATION.
Below it was another handwritten note.
CUSTOMER REPRESENTATIVE DECLINED REPAIR. VEHICLE RELEASED AT REQUEST OF D. MORETTI.
Alessandro read it three times.
Damien knew Elena’s SUV was unsafe.
He took it anyway.
But the larger twist was on the security drive.
The estate gate cameras had captured the night before Elena died.
At 11:42 p.m., Damien entered through the garage gate.
At 12:18 a.m., Elena confronted him outside the vehicle bay.
There was no audio.
But their argument was obvious.
Elena held papers in one hand.
Damien grabbed them.
She pulled them back.
Then Bianca appeared.
Alessandro stopped the video.
Bianca.
Inside the estate.
The night before Elena died.
Bianca had always claimed she barely knew the Rizzanos then.
The footage continued.
Bianca stood between her brother and Elena.
Elena pointed toward the main house.
Damien shook his head.
Then Elena held up her phone.
She appeared to threaten to call someone.
Damien stepped toward her.
Bianca caught his arm.
The confrontation ended without violence.
Elena went inside.
Damien and Bianca remained beside the garage for another eleven minutes.
Investigators recovered part of the old estate-server audio from a separate backup.
Only one sentence was clear.
Bianca’s voice.
“Damien, if she tells Alessandro, this is over.”
Then Damien answered.
“You should have thought about that before you came here.”
Alessandro stared at the screen.
Bianca had not merely known Elena suspected Damien.
Bianca had been inside Alessandro’s home helping her brother deal with the problem.
And she later built a relationship with the widower whose wife had confronted them.
But the final discovery changed something else.
The vehicle records did not prove Damien sabotaged Elena’s car.
They showed something colder.
He already knew it was unsafe.
He knew Elena was driving it.
And after she threatened to expose him, he said nothing.
He allowed her to take the highway the following night.
Whether the crash could have been prevented would require experts to determine.
But one truth no longer required interpretation.
Damien had possessed information that might have saved Elena’s life.

He kept it from Alessandro.
Then he stood beside Alessandro in the hospital and pretended to know nothing.
