Chapter 9: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

The message on my phone didn’t make sense.

It couldn’t.

Claire Whitmore.

The woman Emily said was dead.

The mother of Ava.

The woman whose disappearance had started the chain of lies that destroyed my life.

I looked at Emily.

She looked like she had seen a ghost.

“Ryan…”

I stepped back.

“No.””

She reached toward me.

“Please listen.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You knew.””

“I didn’t.””

“You recognized the name.””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I know what it means.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

She looked down.

And that was the moment I realized something.

Emily wasn’t shocked because Claire was alive.

She was shocked because Claire had finally spoken.

“Tell me the truth.””

Emily closed her eyes.

“I thought she was dead.””

“But?””

She hesitated.

“But I never saw her body.””

The words made my stomach drop.

“You let everyone believe she died without knowing?””

Emily nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard told me.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.””

Emily looked at me.

“Ryan, you don’t understand what he was capable of.””

“Then explain.””

She took a deep breath.

“After the accident, when you lost your memories, Richard came to me.””

“Why?””

“He told me Claire had been killed.””

I stared at her.

“And you believed him?””

“I was twenty-five. I had just lost my sister. I had a baby to protect. I had no idea who to trust.””

She wiped her tears.

“Richard showed me evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“Photos. Reports. Everything looked real.””

I looked at my phone.

At the message from Claire.

“So she survived.””

Emily nodded slowly.

“I think so.””

The room felt different.

Because suddenly, the villain I had been chasing had a victim.

And the person I thought had betrayed me had been trapped too.

But there was still one question.

“What about Sophie?””

Emily looked at me.

“I lied about one thing.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“Sophie isn’t your biological daughter.””

I froze.

The words hit harder than I expected.

“What?””

Emily started crying.

“She’s Claire’s daughter.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t understand.

“No.””

“Ryan…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She called me Daddy.””

“She thinks you are.””

“Why?””

Emily looked at the floor.

“Because after the accident, you raised her.””

My mind raced.

Memories.

Fragments.

A baby crying.

A tiny hand holding my finger.

A woman’s voice saying:

“She needs you.””

But I couldn’t place it.

I had always believed those memories belonged to Lily.

Not Sophie.

Emily continued.

“You loved her from the moment you saw her.””

I stared at her.

“Then why did you hide her?””

“Because Richard found out.””

“And?””

“He threatened to take her.””

I felt anger rising.

“So you hid my own daughter from me?””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I hid her because I knew if Richard knew you remembered, he would destroy everything.””

I wanted to argue.

But I couldn’t.

Because somewhere deep inside me, I knew there were missing pieces.

Pieces Richard had taken.

Then my phone rang.

This time, it wasn’t Richard.

It was Claire.

I answered immediately.

There was silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But real.

“Ryan?””

My entire body froze.

“Claire?””

Emily covered her mouth.

Hearing that name spoken aloud seemed impossible.

“I’m sorry,” Claire whispered.

“Where are you?””

“I don’t have much time.””

“Where is Ava?””

A pause.

“She’s with Richard.””

My hands tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he found out I contacted you.””

Emily stepped closer.

“Claire, it’s Emily.””

The line went silent.

Then Claire whispered:

“Emily.””

The pain in her voice was obvious.

“You kept my children from him.””

Emily started crying.

“I was trying to protect them.””

Claire sighed.

“I know.””

That surprised me.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

Silence.

Then Claire said:

“Because I was the one who asked her to.””

I looked at Emily.

“What?””

Claire continued.

“After the accident, I knew Richard would come after my children. I knew he would use Ryan’s memory loss against him.””

I felt numb.

“So you let me forget?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“Richard did.””

The truth finally began to take shape.

Richard hadn’t just hidden children.

He had hidden memories.

He had controlled every person around him.

“Where is Ava?”” I asked.

Claire’s voice became urgent.

“The old Whitmore estate.””

“I’m going there.””

“No.””

The fear in her voice stopped me.

“Why?””

“Because that’s where he keeps everything.””

“What everything?””

Claire whispered:

“The proof.””

I looked at Emily.

“What proof?””

“The proof that Richard destroyed our family.””

A noise came through the phone.

Claire gasped.

“Someone is coming.””

“Claire?””

“Ryan, listen carefully.””

Her voice became rushed.

“If you find Ava, don’t just take her and leave.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard will make sure everyone believes you are the threat.””

The line crackled.

“Ryan?””

“I’m here.””

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“The person you need to fear isn’t Richard.””

I froze.

“Who is it?””

A long pause.

Then Claire whispered:

“It’s the person who has been helping him.””

The call ended.

I looked at Emily.

She looked terrified.

“Who?”” I asked.

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But before I could respond, my phone received another message.

A photo.

Ava.

Standing inside the old Whitmore estate.

Alive.

And beside her…

Was Lily.

My youngest daughter.

The caption underneath was simple.

“Bring Ryan here. He deserves to see what his family really is.””
