Chapter 2: The Child Nobody Knew

I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t even form a sentence.
The word kept repeating inside my head.
Daddy.
Not Ryan.
Not sir.
Not stranger.
Daddy.
The little girl looked at me like she had been waiting her entire life for that moment.
Behind me, Emily was crying.
Not quietly.
Not the kind of tears someone hides.
She was completely breaking apart.
“Ryan,” she whispered, “please listen to me.””
I stepped away from the child.
Not because I wanted to.
Because my entire world had just changed.
“Who is she?””
Emily wiped her face.
“She’s Sophie.””
“I know her name.””
My voice sounded colder than I expected.
“I’m asking who she is.””
Sophie stood in the doorway, holding onto the frame.
She looked terrified again.
Like she had suddenly realized she had done something wrong.
Emily noticed.
She immediately moved toward her.
“It’s okay, Sophie.””
That made my chest tighten.
Because my wife knew exactly how to comfort this child.
She had done it before.
Many times.
“How long?”” I asked.
Emily stopped.
“How long has she been here?””
No answer.
“Emily.””
She looked down.
“Six months.””
I felt like I had been punched.
Six months.
For half a year, there had been a child living inside my home.
Behind my daughter’s bedroom wall.
And I knew nothing.
“How is that possible?””
Emily sat down slowly on the floor.
“She was scared.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I know.””
Sophie looked between us.
Then she whispered:
“Mommy said you would be angry.””
I looked at Emily.
“What did you tell her about me?””
Emily shook her head quickly.
“Nothing bad. I never wanted her to think you were dangerous.””
“Then why hide her from me?””
Silence.
A painful, heavy silence.
I wanted answers.
But part of me was afraid of what those answers would be.
Emily looked at Sophie.
Then at me.
“Sophie is my daughter.””
The room became completely still.
I stared at her.
“What?””
“She’s my daughter.””
My hands went numb.
“Emily…”
“I had her before we met.””
I felt a thousand thoughts crashing together.
A child.
A secret child.
A hidden room.
A wife who had lied to me.
But one question rose above all the others.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Emily started crying again.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That I would lose everything.””
I looked at Sophie.
The little girl who had called me Daddy.
The little girl who had been living in a hidden space inside my house.
“I’m not her father.””
The words came out quietly.
Emily closed her eyes.
“I know.””
But Sophie immediately shook her head.
“Yes, you are.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at her.
“What did you say?””
She took a small step forward.
“Mommy said not to tell.””
Emily stood up.
“Sophie, no.””
But the little girl continued.
“She said Daddy would come back someday.””
The room felt colder.
I turned to Emily.
“What does that mean?””
Emily looked terrified.
“I can explain.””
“No more explanations.””
My voice rose.
“No more secrets.””
Sophie covered her ears.
I immediately lowered my voice.
“Sorry.””
I hated that she looked afraid.
She had already spent six months hiding.
She didn’t need more fear.
I knelt down slowly.
“What’s your last name, Sophie?””
She looked at Emily.
Then whispered:
“Carter.””
My blood ran cold.
Carter.
My last name.
I stood up.
“What?””
Emily looked away.
“Ryan…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, you don’t get to say my name like that.””
I looked at Sophie.
Then back at my wife.
“Why does she have my last name?””
Emily’s face collapsed.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
“When she turned eighteen?””
“I was trying to protect her.””
“From what?””
Emily walked toward the hidden room.
Inside were small blankets, children’s books, stuffed animals, and a tiny lamp.
A child’s entire life hidden away.
Then she picked up a worn folder from the corner.
Her hands were shaking.
“There’s something you need to see.””
She opened it.
Inside were documents.
Medical papers.
A birth certificate.
I grabbed it.
And when I saw the name listed under father, the air left my lungs.
Because the name written there was mine.
Ryan Carter.
My signature.
My information.
A child born years before I thought I had ever met Emily.
“This is impossible.””
Emily looked at me.
“I know how it looks.””
“How it looks?””
I held up the paper.
“This says I have a daughter I never knew about.””
Sophie whispered:
“You forgot me.””
The pain in her voice was worse than any accusation.
I looked at her.
And for the first time, I saw something beyond the shock.
I saw a scared little girl who had spent her life believing her father abandoned her.
“Emily,” I said quietly, “tell me everything.””
She took a deep breath.
But before she could speak, my phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then Sophie looked at the phone.
And her face changed.
“Don’t answer.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Because that’s the man who told Mommy to hide me.””
The phone kept ringing.
Emily looked at the number.
And all the color disappeared from her face.
Because she recognized it.
Then she whispered:
“Ryan…”
I looked at her.
“Who is calling?””
She swallowed hard.
“The person who knows the real reason Sophie was hidden.””
The phone stopped ringing.
A second later, a message appeared.
One sentence.
One name.
May you like
And the moment I read it, I realized the secret inside my walls was only the beginning.
“Ryan, ask your wife what happened to your first child.””
