Chapter 5 - THE FINAL ENTRY

I sat in the lake house study long after the police had finished their initial work. Evelyn had been taken away in handcuffs, screaming that she had done nothing wrong, that I was the one who should be arrested. Her voice faded only when the squad car doors slammed shut.

Mia slept on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket, exhausted but safe. Elena sat in the chair opposite me, waiting quietly. She did not push me to speak. She just watched me read Grace’s journal entry again and again, as if reading it enough times might change the words.

It didn’t.

Grace had been afraid. She had known someone was hurting her. And she had written it down. Just in case.

“The medication,” I said finally. “What did the lab say?”

Elena checked her notes. “It’s preliminary. But the substance found in Evelyn’s vial — and traces found in Grace’s old medical bottles — appears to be something that accelerates heart failure. If she was already ill, this would have made her condition untreatable and fatal in weeks.”

I nodded slowly. “So she didn’t die naturally.”

“It looks that way. The coroner is reviewing the case. Exhumation may be ordered.”

I closed my eyes. Grace had known. She had written it down. She had left the journal. And she had set up the trust. Not just to protect Mia’s money. To protect her life. She had known they would come for her daughter once she was gone.

I opened the journal and turned the page. The final entry.

My dearest Adrian,

If you are reading this, I am already gone. Please do not grieve too long. And please — do not trust the people who weep the loudest at my funeral.

Evelyn has always been jealous. She wanted everything I had. My life. My home. My husband. And now — my daughter. She will not stop until she takes Mia’s place.

Watch Vanessa. She appeared too soon after my death. She knows too much. She is being used. But she is also dangerous.

And watch your mother. She loves you, but she has always valued family pride over truth. Evelyn will use that. She will tell her lies. She will turn her against you.

I have protected everything I can protect from here. The money. The house. The documents. But I cannot protect Mia from the world.

Only you can do that.

Teach her to be brave. Teach her to be kind. But above all — teach her to be careful who she trusts.

If they ask about the child’s birth certificate — or the adoption papers — or anything about where she truly came from — do not answer. Not until her twenty-fifth birthday.

Some secrets are too dangerous to know too soon.

I love you both more than I can ever write.

Grace

I sat very still.

Birth certificate? Adoption papers? Where she truly came from?

I read the paragraph again. Then again.

Grace had written it clearly. There was something about Mia’s birth I did not know. Something dangerous enough to hide until she turned twenty-five.

I looked over at my daughter. She slept peacefully, her hand curled beneath her cheek. She looked so much like Grace. Same eyes. Same smile. Same quiet strength. But there was something else too. Something in the shape of her jaw. The curve of her brow. Something I had never been able to place.

Grace had always been vague about the early months of Mia’s life. She had been born overseas, while we were working abroad. Grace had come home alone, bringing the baby with her. She had said the birth mother was a relative who could not care for her. She had said it was too painful to talk about.

I had accepted it. Because I loved Grace. Because Mia was my daughter in every way that mattered.

But now — Grace’s own words told me there was more. Much more.

“Adrian?” Elena’s voice was soft. “You’ve gone pale.”

I closed the journal. “Grace wrote something. About Mia’s origins. She said there was a secret. Dangerous enough to keep until she’s twenty-five.”

Elena leaned forward. “What kind of secret?”

“She didn’t say. Only that if anyone asks about the birth certificate or adoption papers — don’t answer.”

“Who would ask?”

“The people who killed Grace.” I stood up slowly. “Evelyn knew. Vanessa knew. That’s what they were really after. Not just the money. They want to know who Mia really is.”

Elena stood as well. “Then we keep it hidden. Just like Grace said.”

“Grace is dead,” I said quietly. “And they are still hunting for the truth. If they find out before Mia is old enough to protect herself —”

I did not finish the sentence. I did not need to.

Mia stirred on the sofa. She opened her eyes and looked at me. “Daddy? Are we going home now?”

I walked over and brushed the hair from her face. “Yes, little bird. We’re going home.”

“Is Vanessa gone?”

“For now.”

“Will she come back?”

I looked at Grace’s journal on the table. At the words warning me that they would not stop. At the knowledge that this was about more than money.

“Yes,” I said honestly. “She will try. But we will be ready. And I will never let anything happen to you.”

Mia sat up and wrapped her arms around my neck. “I’m not afraid. You’re here. And Mommy Grace is watching us too, isn’t she?”

My throat tightened. “Yes. She is.”

I carried Mia out to the car. As we drove away from the lake house, I looked back one last time. The police were finishing up. The boat was gone. The secrets were still there, waiting.

Grace had left me a map. She had left me warnings. She had left me her love.

But she had also left me a mystery. One that people had already killed to uncover. One they would kill again to possess.

I looked in the rearview mirror. Mia was asleep once more, safe in the back seat.

I would protect her. I would keep her safe. And I would uncover the truth myself — before they did.

Whatever the secret was. Whoever Mia really was. Whatever Grace had died to hide — I would find the answers. And I would make sure Grace’s death was not in vain.

Somewhere out there, Vanessa was running. And somewhere, she was waiting. Waiting for the moment she could strike again. Waiting for the secret.

But this time — I would be ready.
