Chapter 3 - THE VIDEO FROM SIX YEARS AGO

Sarah did not accuse Alexander of killing or abandoning a child.

She did something worse.

She stopped speaking to him.

He knew what she was thinking.

He also knew the signature looked real.

“I never signed that.”

Sarah stared at the screen.

“You had that credential.”

“Yes.”

“Who else had it?”

“My father could access emergency founder systems.”

Theodore Cole.

Dead for four years.

Conveniently unable to answer questions.

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“Then prove it.”

Alexander did not argue.

They drove to St. Matthew’s before sunrise.

Lily remained at the mansion with Emily and two independent guards Alexander brought in from outside his normal security team.

The hospital administrator resisted giving them archived surveillance until Alexander produced the unsigned death record.

Then everything changed.

An old storage server still contained fragments from the night of Emily’s birth.

11:41 p.m.

Sarah was unconscious after emergency surgery.

Alexander appeared outside recovery.

He looked exhausted.

A nurse handed him one swaddled infant.

Emily.

12:03 a.m.

Alexander left the maternity floor to take a call.

12:07.

Another nurse pushed a second bassinet from neonatal care.

BABY COLE B.

Sarah gripped Alexander’s arm.

“There she is.”

The nurse’s face came into view.

Nora Shaw.

Lily’s caretaker.

Then another man entered the frame.

Theodore Cole.

Alexander’s father.

Theodore spoke to Nora.

There was no audio.

He handed her paperwork.

Nora lifted Baby B.

Theodore opened a restricted service elevator.

They disappeared.

Alexander stared at the screen.

“My father took her.”

Sarah stepped away from him.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

She wanted to believe him.

He could see that.

But evidence mattered more than wanting.

Then a fire alarm erupted.

Hospital staff rushed into the hallway.

Smoke began pouring from the archive room.

“Everyone out!”

Alexander turned.

A masked man was inside the records office.

Not escaping.

Destroying shelves.

Alexander ran through the smoke.

The man shoved an old server toward the floor.

Alexander caught him from behind.

They crashed into a cabinet.

The attacker swung a metal drive tray.

Alexander blocked it.

Security entered seconds later.

The man broke free through a side door.

He disappeared down the stairwell.

But he left something behind.

A black burner phone.

One message was still visible.

DESTROY THE COLE B ARCHIVE BEFORE THEY SEE THEODORE.

Alexander read it twice.

This was not a six-year-old secret sitting untouched.

Someone was actively protecting it now.

They copied the surviving hospital footage before leaving.

Back at the mansion, Daniel Cross was gone.

The outside guards found his office empty.

A service grate had been removed behind his filing cabinets.

Alexander entered the passage.

Daniel had used the same hidden corridor Lily had been living inside.

They followed it to the old boiler room.

Daniel was there.

Burning documents in a metal barrel.

Alexander kicked the barrel over.

“What are you destroying?”

Daniel ran.

Alexander chased him through the service tunnel.

They collided beneath the east staircase.

Daniel swung first.

Alexander drove him against the wall.

“Where is Nora?”

Daniel stopped fighting.

“I don’t know.”

“Why did Lily know your key?”

“Because Nora stole one.”

“Why?”

“To get the girl inside.”

Alexander tightened his grip.

“Who are you working for?”

Daniel laughed once.

“You think I started this?”

His phone contained eleven payments totaling $270,000.

Sender:

VALE LEGACY SERVICES.

Alexander knew the name.

Richard Vale.

Chairman of the Cole Legacy Foundation.

Alexander’s father’s oldest business partner.

His own godfather.

The most recent message from Richard read:

YOU HAD ONE JOB. FIND THE GIRL BEFORE ALEXANDER DOES.

Daniel looked at the hospital still of Theodore carrying Baby B.

Then at Alexander.

“Your father didn’t take her to hurt you.”

Alexander said nothing.

“He knew someone was coming for the second baby.”

“Who?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I was hired this month. I don’t know what happened six years ago.”

“Then what do you know?”

Daniel looked toward the burning documents.

“Vale learned Nora was coming back.”

“Why now?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Because Lily turns seven on Monday.”

Alexander stared at him.

“What happens Monday?”

May you like

Daniel answered quietly.

“If she isn’t legally recognized by then, she loses something worth more than this mansion.”
