Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Accident

Pier Seventeen looked abandoned from the street.
It was not.
Gabriel identified six security cameras before Elias’s vehicle reached the entrance.
Clara sat beside him.
“You promised him you’d come alone.”
“I lied.”
“That’s strangely reassuring.”
Elias glanced at her.
“You could stay in the car.”
“No.”
“You’re stubborn.”
“I spent five years regretting the one time I let fear silence me. I’m not repeating it.”
Elias looked away before she could see how deeply the answer affected him.
Gabriel stopped the SUV.
“I’ll stay outside unless you call.”
Elias nodded.
He and Clara entered the warehouse.
Sebastian Black waited beneath a single row of overhead lights.
He was seventy-one.
Silver-haired.
Tall.
Elegant.
Nothing about him resembled the monster Elias had imagined.
That made him worse.
“Clara Dunn,” Sebastian said.
Clara stiffened.
“You remember me.”
“I remember everyone who causes me inconvenience.”
Elias wheeled forward.
“Talk.”
Sebastian smiled.
“Still impatient.”
“Still alive.”
“Precisely.”
A table stood between them.
On it sat an old tape recorder and a sealed envelope.
Elias recognized his father’s handwriting.
ELIAS.
His throat tightened.
Sebastian noticed.
“Salvatore recorded it the night before he died.”
“Why do you have it?”
“Because he gave it to me.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
Sebastian pressed play.
Static filled the warehouse.
Then Salvatore Baron’s voice emerged.
“Elias, if you’re hearing this, then Sebastian and I failed to settle something ourselves.”
Elias stopped breathing for a moment.
He had not heard his father’s voice in years.
“You’ll be angry,” Salvatore continued. “Good. Anger means you’re listening.”
Clara looked at Elias.
He stared at the recorder.
“I helped Sebastian build the machine that became his network. That is my sin. I told myself we were protecting our businesses. Eventually I realized we were controlling people through fear. I tried to dismantle it. Sebastian refused.”
Sebastian’s expression remained unreadable.
Salvatore continued.
“If I die unexpectedly, do not avenge me. That is exactly the inheritance I refuse to give you.”
Elias’s eyes burned.
“Break the machine, son. Don’t become the man I was. And don’t become Sebastian.”
The recording clicked off.
Silence filled the warehouse.
Elias looked at Sebastian.
“You kept that?”
“For nine years.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought eventually you would understand that Salvatore became weak.”
“No.”
Sebastian smiled.
“There it is. Loyalty.”
“He became better.”
“He became sentimental.”
“He became ashamed.”
Sebastian’s smile disappeared.
Elias looked at the envelope.
“What’s inside?”
“Control.”
Sebastian pushed it toward him.
Documents listed corporations, offshore accounts, shell companies, political contacts, compromised executives, and hidden assets.
An empire built from leverage.
“Take it,” Sebastian said.
Elias did not touch it.
“You destroyed my spine to offer me a job?”
“I removed distractions.”
“Margot?”
“A distraction.”
“My father?”
“A disappointment.”
Clara inhaled sharply.
Elias remained still.
“You expected me to kill you eventually, didn’t you?”
Sebastian smiled again.
“I expected you to become capable of it.”
“And then?”
“Then I would know I chose correctly.”
Elias understood.
This entire confrontation was another test.
Sebastian wanted violence.
He wanted Elias to prove that suffering had transformed him into the heir Sebastian imagined.
Elias reached toward the envelope.
Sebastian watched eagerly.
Elias picked it up.
Then handed it to Clara.
“Give it to Gabriel.”
Sebastian’s expression changed.
“What are you doing?”
“Breaking the machine.”
The warehouse doors opened.
Federal investigators entered alongside Gabriel.
Sebastian stared at Elias.
“You think paperwork defeats power?”
“No.”
Elias looked toward the officers.
“Evidence does.”
Sebastian’s composure cracked.
“You have nothing.”
Victor Ashford stepped through the doorway with his attorney.
Sebastian’s face changed.
Victor had spent the previous twelve hours giving investigators a detailed statement.
Margot had surrendered financial records.
Gabriel had provided archived evidence from Elias’s crash.
Clara had supplied the photograph of Victor’s list.
And Elias had recorded Sebastian’s entire conversation.
Sebastian stared at them.
Then he laughed.
“Salvatore would be disgusted.”
Elias looked at the tape recorder.
“No.”
For the first time that night, his voice softened.
“I think he’d finally be relieved.”
Sebastian was taken into custody without violence.
Elias watched him leave.
No triumph came.
Only exhaustion.
Outside, the Delaware River reflected the city lights.
Clara stood beside him.
“You did it.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“We did.”
She smiled faintly.
Then her expression changed.
“What?”
Clara looked toward the warehouse.
“Victor.”
“What about him?”
“He said something during his statement.”
Elias waited.
“He said the sabotage to your steering system was ordered by Sebastian.”
“We know.”
“No. He said Sebastian ordered it disabled before the crash.”
Elias frowned.
“What?”
“Sebastian changed his mind.”
“Then who reactivated it?”
Clara looked worried.
“That’s the problem.”
Gabriel approached them.
His face confirmed it.
“We found the original work order,” he said.
“Who authorized it?”
Gabriel hesitated.
Elias suddenly understood why.
Not Sebastian.
Someone else had wanted the crash to happen.
Someone close enough to Elias to know exactly which vehicle he would drive that night.
Elias looked toward the city.
“Margot.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Gabriel handed him a photocopy.
The authorization contained no name.
Only an employee code.
Elias recognized it.
His stomach tightened.
The code belonged to a person who had worked inside Baron Holdings for eleven years.
A person who had access to his schedules.
A person who had visited him in the hospital every week after the crash.
Elias looked up.
“Where is my cousin Daniel?”
Gabriel’s expression darkened.
“Nobody’s seen him since yesterday.”
Sebastian Black had been arrested.
But the person who actually ensured Elias’s accident happened was still free.

And now he knew Elias was looking for him.
