Chapter 4

Emily carefully turned the stuffed rabbit over.

A seam along its back had been opened and closed with safety pins.

Lily watched from the couch.

“Grandma put papers inside Bunny,” she whispered.

“When?”

“After Grandpa died.”

Emily removed the pins.

A thick envelope slid out.

On the front, her late father-in-law’s handwriting read:

FOR EMILY. OPEN IF DIANE TRIES TO TAKE THE CHILDREN.

Ryan’s father, Thomas, had died two years earlier.

He had been the only member of Ryan’s family who treated Emily with kindness.

Her hands trembled as she opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then I failed to stop Diane myself.

She believes love is ownership.

She has controlled Ryan through fear since childhood.

Now she has begun talking about controlling Ethan and Lily.

I created a trust for my grandchildren.

You are its sole trustee because you are the only person I trust to protect them.

Diane does not know I changed the documents.

Ryan knows there is a trust, but he does not know the final terms.

The original papers are enclosed.

There was more.

Thomas had left each child five hundred thousand dollars.

The money could be used for health care, education, and housing.

Emily alone had authority until both children turned twenty-five.

Yet attached bank statements showed withdrawals from an account bearing the trust’s name.

Nearly three hundred thousand dollars was missing.

Rachel spread the pages across the dining table.

“If these are real, someone forged your signature.”

Emily examined the transfers.

Each payment went to a company called DCR Holdings.

The address belonged to Diane.

“Can she access the trust?”

“She shouldn’t be able to.”

“Ryan works at the bank that manages it.”

Rachel’s expression changed.

“He may have helped her.”

Emily didn’t want to believe it.

Then she remembered his message.

Mom says this is the only way.

Lily touched her arm.

“Are we poor now?”

Emily pulled her close.

“No, sweetheart.”

“Grandma said you took all our money.”

“Grandma lied.”

Ethan sat beside them.

“Is Dad coming back?”

Emily couldn’t answer.

Rachel stayed up preparing their response.

At seven in the morning, she received the evidence files from Ethan’s tablet.

Officer Morales added the new recordings to his report.

Nina Patel agreed to appear at the hearing.

Ryan arrived at the courthouse with Diane.

He wore the blue suit Emily had bought for their anniversary.

Diane walked beside him in white.

She looked like a grieving grandmother instead of the woman who had starved a child.

Emily kept Lily and Ethan close.

Diane’s attorney approached.

“My client is willing to resolve this privately.”

Rachel stepped between them.

“Then your client can withdraw her petition.”

Diane smiled.

“Return the trust documents, and I may reconsider.”

Ryan looked startled.

“What documents?”

Emily watched Diane’s face.

That was the first mistake Diane made.

She had revealed the real reason for the case.

Rachel’s voice remained calm.

“We’ll discuss all relevant documents before the judge.”

Diane grabbed Ryan’s arm and pulled him away.

“What trust documents?” Emily heard him ask.

Diane whispered something sharp.

Ryan looked back at Emily.

Fear replaced confusion.

The hearing began at nine.

Judge Helen Brooks reviewed the emergency petition.

Diane’s attorney played the edited videos.

The first showed Emily shouting.

The second showed her leaving while Lily cried.

A third showed Emily slapping the plate from Diane’s hand.

It did not show Diane throwing the noodles.

Diane wiped tears from her eyes.

“I tried to protect my grandchildren,” she testified. “Emily has violent outbursts. She works constantly. The children often go without proper care.”

Emily’s fingernails pressed into her palms.

Rachel touched her arm.

“Wait.”

Diane continued.

“Yesterday, Emily attacked me and kidnapped the children.”

“Did you throw food at Lily?” Rachel asked.

“I accidentally dropped a plate during Emily’s attack.”

“You stated in your petition that Lily stole a necklace.”

“She did.”

“How did you find it?”

“In her backpack.”

“Did you place it there?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Have you ever locked Lily in a pantry?”

Diane looked wounded.

“The child hides there.”

“Does the pantry door have a handle on the inside?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you photograph the children holding signs labeling them liars and thieves?”

Diane’s attorney stood.

“Objection.”

Judge Brooks looked at Diane.

“Answer the question.”

“I used a behavior exercise recommended online.”

“You photographed it?”

“To track their progress.”

Rachel lifted a flash drive.

“We have recordings from inside the pantry.”

Diane’s face tightened.

Her attorney objected again.

The judge allowed the audio to play.

Lily’s frightened voice filled the courtroom.

“I’m hungry.”

“You should have thought of that before touching my necklace.”

“I didn’t touch it.”

“Say you did.”

“No.”

Then came the bang and Lily’s scream.

Emily heard people shift in the gallery.

Diane remained still.

Ryan lowered his head.

His own recorded voice followed.

“Mom, how long has she been in there?”

“Twenty minutes.”

“You promised you wouldn’t leave marks.”

Judge Brooks stopped the recording.

“Mr. Carter, is that your voice?”

Ryan looked at his attorney.

“Yes.”

“Did you know your mother confined your daughter?”

“I thought it was a time-out.”

“In a pantry without an interior handle?”

“I didn’t inspect the door.”

Emily stared at the man she had trusted for nine years.

Judge Brooks’s expression was unreadable.

“Why did you warn your mother about leaving marks?”

Ryan swallowed.

“I was afraid Emily would misunderstand.”

“What was there to misunderstand?”

He had no answer.

Nina Patel testified next.

She described Lily’s weight loss and Ethan’s account of being restrained.

The pediatrician’s report was entered into evidence.

Diane’s attorney attacked Emily’s work schedule.

He claimed Emily was rarely home.

He suggested Ryan and Diane had been the children’s primary caregivers.

“That isn’t true,” Emily said.

The attorney turned.

“You regularly work until seven.”

“Twice a week.”

“And who feeds your children then?”

“Ryan was supposed to.”

Ryan looked away.

Diane whispered loudly, “I did everything.”

Rachel stood.

“Mrs. Carter, yesterday you stated that thieves do not eat in your house. Was withholding food part of your care?”

Diane’s attorney objected.

Judge Brooks allowed the question.

Diane straightened.

“I never withheld proper meals.”

Lily suddenly stood beside Emily.

“Yes, you did.”

The courtroom went silent.

Emily pulled her close.

The judge spoke gently.

“Lily, you do not have to talk here.”

Lily held Mr. Bunny.

“Grandma said Mommy had to go away. She said I had to tell people Mommy hit me.”

Diane’s calm face cracked.

“She is repeating what Emily taught her.”

“No,” Ethan shouted. “You taught us lies!”

A bailiff moved closer, but Judge Brooks raised her hand.

She looked at Ethan.

“Do you have something you need to say?”

Ethan nodded fiercely.

“Grandma made Lily practice crying for the camera. She said if we helped, we could see Mom again.”

Emily began to cry.

Diane leaned toward her attorney.

The judge ordered a short recess.

In the hallway, Ryan approached Emily.

“I didn’t know she made them practice.”

“You heard Lily locked inside that pantry.”

“I should have stopped it.”

“You should have protected her.”

“I was scared of what Mom would do.”

Emily stared at him.

“You are thirty-eight years old.”

“She controls everything.”

“You allowed her to control our children.”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“I can help you prove what she did.”

“Then tell the truth.”

“If I do, I could lose my job.”

Emily understood.

“The trust.”

He looked toward Diane.

“She said Dad left the money to her. She asked me to authorize temporary transfers.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I didn’t know you were the trustee at first.”

“And after you learned?”

Ryan couldn’t meet her eyes.

“I was already involved.”

“How much did you take?”

“I didn’t take anything.”

“How much did you help her steal?”

His silence answered.

Diane walked toward them.

“Ryan, don’t say another word.”

He stepped away from Emily instantly.

Diane still owned his fear.

When court resumed, Rachel presented Thomas’s letter and the trust documents.

Diane’s attorney argued they were unrelated to custody.

Rachel explained that Diane’s petition came after she learned Emily controlled the trust.

Judge Brooks examined the documents.

“Mr. Carter, did you process withdrawals from these accounts?”

Ryan’s attorney stood.

“He invokes his right against self-incrimination.”

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

Emily felt Ryan’s choice like a door closing.

The judge announced her temporary ruling.

The children would remain with Emily.

Ryan would receive supervised visitation only.

Diane would have no contact with either child.

A protective order would remain in place pending investigation.

Emily nearly collapsed with relief.

Diane did not move.

Her face became empty.

Then Judge Brooks continued.

“Because of credible evidence of financial crimes, these records will be referred to the district attorney.”

Ryan turned pale.

Diane leaned close to him.

Emily heard her whisper.

“This is all your fault.”

Outside the courtroom, police officers waited for Diane.

They did not arrest her.

They served the protective order and requested an interview.

Diane refused.

As Emily walked toward Claire’s car, her phone buzzed.

A message came from an unknown number.

You think you won.

The photograph attached showed Claire’s house.

It had been taken minutes earlier.

Emily immediately called Officer Morales.

Claire drove while Rachel checked the children.

When they reached the house, the front door was open.

Nothing appeared stolen.

Then Ethan ran toward the bedroom.

“Mr. Rocket!”

His favorite stuffed toy was gone.

On his pillow lay a gold necklace.

The same necklace Diane had planted in Lily’s backpack.

Beneath it was a note.

LIARS ALWAYS LOSE.

Claire checked the backyard.

The gate swung open.

Officer Morales arrived within minutes.

He examined the locks.

“There’s no forced entry.”

Claire went pale.

“Only four people have keys.”

“Who?”

“Me, Emily, my mother, and Ryan.”

Emily called Ryan.

He answered after six rings.

“I’m at work.”

“Someone entered Claire’s house.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Ethan’s toy is missing. Your mother’s necklace is here.”

Ryan breathed heavily.

“I didn’t do it.”

“Does Diane have your key?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

Silence.

“Ryan?”

“She borrowed my key ring this morning.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Officer Morales heard everything.

“Tell me where she is,” Emily said.

“I don’t know.”

Then Lily screamed from the hallway.

Everyone ran to her.

She pointed at Mr. Bunny.

A tiny red light blinked inside one plastic eye.

Officer Morales carefully opened the seam.

Hidden beneath the fabric was a small camera.

It was transmitting live.

Diane had been watching them.

And somewhere outside, a car engine started.
